All the latest Veg-Heads news!
Hey all, if any of you have checked out our blogspot in the past you may remember that I wrote a wee piece on thrifty vegan spending for things like skincare products, cosmetics etc. So, just to update you on a few of those things. Firstly, see Michelle's post on facebook about how Simple shampoo/conditioner is now available in Poundland in Belfast. A pound I tells ya!!! You can't beat it. In addition, Poundland occasionally provide Original Source showergel, which is vegan and a few other products from Simple so keep your eyes peeled for vegan bargains.
Secondly, Lush have made even more of its products vegan and the range is expanding all the time. Not only that but they support animal rights causes like their current xmas campaign to ban greyhound racing, so please do try to support them in their efforts whilst also smelling like you fell into a bathtub of beautiful fragrances!! :p
And lastly, Superdrug have also expanded their vegan range. I actually get giddy with excitement when I go into Superdrug and find the latest thing they've brought out that's all vegan-friendly. Like recently I discovered some lovely face-masks - a cucumber one and a chocolate one - all vegan! So pop in for a wee nosey and join me in this mild vegan giddiness! Lol.
In other veg-heads news, we are hoping to have a potluck in November, which is world vegan month, so watch out for an invite. Also, the Queens Vegetarian and Vegan Society is up and running again this semester and they are hoping to have a stall in the students union before xmas and they have asked for our help with leaflets and volunteers so if anyone is up for that just let Donna or me know.
That's all for now folks.

Vegan Potluck Success- 3rd July
In our last update we mentioned that there was some discussion within the group about having a cookery club as a more informal way of getting our members together on a regular basis, but after some consideration this idea proved to be difficult to arrange in practice as we couldn't find a space big enough for everyone to cook in! So, as a compromise we decided to arrange our first vegan potluck, and lucky for us we managed to coincide this with a housewarming for one of our newest members, Daniel. Last Saturday (July 3rd), a bunch of us made some delicious vegan food and congregated in Daniel's new pad for a lovely evening of drinking, sampling vegan culinary delights and chatting, and with the success of this first potluck we have decided to make it a monthly affair.
The date for the next potluck will be Saturday August 14th 2010, with the time and venue yet to be confirmed. Details will be updated as and when we get them on the facebook page so keep checking it regularly. And don't forget to spread the word to any fellow veg-heads about joining the group. It really is a great way to make new friends. :)
That's all for now, folks!
Cheers and vegan hugs!

Veggie-goodness in Belfast
Since this blog began we have had a list of the best vegan/vegetarian places in Belfast down the side for you to check out. But we thought we'd take this opportunity to let you know about two places in particular that might be worth checking out at the moment.
The first is Oodles Noodle bar on Botanic Avenue (http://www.oodleslovesnoodles.com/). Although not strictly vegan/vege, this places offers delicious and affordable vegan/veggie food prepared right in front of you. You can either sit in or take away and the staff are always pleasant and welcoming. In addition, on a recent visit we have discovered that Oodles are now selling vegan goodies made by the company 'Natasha's Living Food' (www.natashaslivingfood.ie), which is based in Dublin. According to the member of staff I spoke to, this company is the only one in Ireland making such vegan treats and Oodles are their only distributor in Northern Ireland, so they are definitely worth checking out.
The second place is World Peace Cafe on Donegall Pass (below Potala Buddhist Centre and just past the police station), who are open Monday-Friday 12-2pm for vegetarian/vegan lunches in a relaxed atmosphere. The cafe are holding an event on Friday 23rd April at 7pm with a half hour meditation (optional) followed by a three course veggie meal (with vegan options) for £12.50. This event needs to be pre-booked and you can find out how to contact the cafe by visiting their website at http://www.meditationinbelfast.org/wpc.html.
Check out the list on the left-hand side for more ideas on where to eat out/buy food in Belfast.

2010 Update...
The Veg-Heads have had a quiet year so far, but all that is about to change. We now have 62 members in the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=135649283773&v=info&ref=ts), and we are getting new requests to join all the time.
We also held our first meeting of 2010 on Monday 19th April at Jenz coffee house on Lisburn Road. Topics under discussion included the idea of a cookery club for us veggies to get together and cook some food and exchange some recipes. We also discussed the possibility of another vegan stall to raise money, which could then be added to the funds we raised with our last stall and given to local animal charities.
We agreed that perhaps the current format for meetings (that is, emailing a time/venue and expecting people to show) was proving problematic and decided that the next Veg-Heads get-together should be for the cookery club and arrangements are underway to get this planned for next month.
In the meantime, there are active debates taking place between members on the facebook discussion boards, so if you haven't already done so then check out the facebook group and send us a request if you're interested in joining.
That's all for now.
